A year ago the streets of the United States were filled with voices exclaiming “I can’t breathe,” “Black Lives Matter,” and “enough is enough.”
We, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, affirm the statement made by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) regarding the tragic events of yesterday in Washington, DC. We join with the world in praying for peace after witnessing the violence and lawlessness in our nation’s capital. We are deeply concerned about the state of our country and the future of our democracy.
LCWR (The Leadership Conference of Women Religious) is partnering with other faith leaders calling for all people to spend time during the weekend of May 29-31 to lament and mourn the 100,000 persons who will have died in the United States from COVID-19, and to pause at noon on June 1 to honor the deceased.
A familiar Spanish saying defines the experience and worldview of Sister of Charity of the Incarnate Word Teresa Maya: Ni de aquí, ni de allá (“from neither here nor there”).
