Luke 2:33-35

Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;

and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,

“Behold, this child is destined

for the fall and rise of many in Israel,

and to be a sign that will be contradicted

and you yourself a sword will pierce

so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Traditionally, there are the “Seven Sorrows of Mary” – times in the life of her son, Jesus, that she suffered either with or because of him.

First, is this encounter with Simeon who revealed to Mary her suffering to come. Second, when she had to flee with Joseph and Jesus to Egypt at the threat of Herod and the murder of the children. Third, when Jesus was lost, but found in the Temple. Fourth, when Mary encounters Jesus carrying his cross to his execution. Fifth, standing at the foot of the cross; sixth, Jesus’ death, and finally; assisting at the burial of Jesus.
