How can the Tricentennial of San Antonio be our celebration?
Before the Spaniards spoke the name “San Antonio” for the beautiful wooded area by the glistening water in 1718, the oaks near the headwaters of Yanaguana, the river, were growing. Today we sit in their shade. Even a century or two before the Spaniards came, these roots had been growing.
We are also strengthened by the roots of compassionate care for the sick, the orphans, and the uneducated which started in 1869 when the first three Incarnate Word Sisters came to San Antonio. We continue with care for creation and continue developing innovative and compassionate service in light of today’s pressing needs. Incarnate Word has been a part of San Antonio for almost half of its history and you are a part of Incarnate Word.
We have a “BIG BIRTHDAY” coming up! How can this be time of joy and growth for us? How can we be spiritually renewed and strengthened?
How would your student organization, club, residence hall, team, sorority, fraternity, class, and/or other group like to be part of the year of commemoration and celebration? Have a gathering? How would your area like to be a part of a festival and educational day on the IW campus April 15, 2018? This day called “Mi Casa es Su Casa: Come Celebrate With Us!” has been initiated by the IW Sisters, UIW, and CHRISTUS Health Care, but it is also a part of the Inter-University Series recognizing how important higher education is in our city.

“Mi Casa es Su Casa: Come Celebrate With Us!” Sunday, April 15, 2018, an open house on the campus of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word with both educational and festive events and exhibits. This includes a symposium, a part of the San Antonio 300 university series, with anthropologist Dr. Steve Tomka and historian Dr. Gerald Poyo. They will focus on early peoples near the Headwaters of the San Antonio River and early education in the area.
“Photo Septiembre” Exhibits
Simultaneous displays on Incarnate Word history created by historian Dr. Gilberto Hinojosa for the month of September. The one in the UIW Semmes Art Gallery will focus on education and the one at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio will focus on health care in the development of the city.
